MCC Brussels stands against the weaponisation of LGBTQ issues and the Commission's legal warfare to attack national sovereignty

Brussels, 19th November 2024 – Today, the European Commission ganged up with the LGBTQI lobby to attack Hungary in the European Court of Justice. MCC Brussels, Executive Director Frank Furedi highlighted a comprehensive report showing the impact of the European Union's policies on LGBTQI issues and its implications for member states, particularly those in Central and Eastern Europe. The report's analysis points out that, over the last 20 years, the promotion of LGBTQI issues has become a central aspect of EU identity, heavily intertwined with transgender ideology and wielded as a measure of European conformity.

Frank Furedi, Executive Director of MCC Brussels, stated,

"It has become increasingly obvious that hidden within the trojan horse of fake claims of "queer' rights being violated lurks the real agenda, which is to use this slur to deprive nations of their rights within the EU and to attack national sovereignty.

Hungary is standing firm against a campaign of intimidation that misrepresents itself as a fight for rights. In truth, this is an orchestrated effort to challenge nations' right to exercise their sovereignty and make independent decisions regarding social, family, and private policies. This misuse of Article 2 as a legal bludgeon serves a broader federalism agenda, attempting to coerce states and question their rightful place within the EU."

The EU's approach has transformed LGBTQI rights from being a symbol of inclusivity to a mechanism of division, one that positions nations of Central and Eastern Europe as inherently problematic. This shift undermines their ability to develop their social policies democratically and creates friction instead of fostering unity."

Key Findings:

  • Weaponisation of Sexual Rights: The EU's emphasis on sexual rights has been used to stigmatise certain member states, branding them as "norm violators" and marginalising their civil cultures. The Treaty of Amsterdam (1999) was a pivotal moment that empowered NGOs like ILGA-Europe to advance this agenda.
  • Undermining National Sovereignty: By imposing a non-negotiable rights framework, the EU has limited the capacity of national populations to engage in democratic deliberation and shape their own cultural and social development.
  • Polarisation and Disruption: This top-down strategy has intensified societal divisions, portraying traditional and conservative communities as intolerant. Such framing disrupts local political and civil structures and bypasses genuine public engagement.

Recommendations:

MCC Brussels urges the EU to take the following measures to promote cohesion and respect for cultural diversity among its member states:

  1. Re-establish European Unity: Foster a renewed commitment to mutual respect that values the plurality and cultural diversity inherent in the EU. The singular focus on sexual rights as a litmus test of European identity has proven destabilising.
  2. Encourage Accountable Public Dialogue: Create transparent and inclusive spaces for dialogue around sexual identity and rights, allowing citizens to contribute meaningfully to policy formation and social discourse.
  3. Promote Constructive Debate: Ensure that discussions are conducted in good faith, avoiding the automatic vilification of dissenting voices as "norm violators," especially on sensitive issues involving children.
  4. Respect Democratic Sovereignty: Reinforce the role of national institutions in shaping policies around sexual identity and rights, ensuring these bodies maintain their legitimacy and influence.
  5. Reassess EU Conditionality: Modify the EU's conditional approach to value normalisation, which has fostered divisions between national LGBTQ communities and the broader public.

Furedi concluded, "For the EU to genuinely embody unity, it must transition from imposing ideals to fostering an environment where open debate and mutual respect allow member states to evolve and integrate on their terms. Only through such dialogue can we achieve meaningful social change."
