From “independent” fact-checkers bankrolled by Brussels, to the Digital Services Act empowering Eurocrats to strongarm platforms into silencing dissenting voices, a new front has opened in Europe’s war on so-called misinformation. At the heart of this is the EU’s desire to define what is true and what is fake news.

A new report exposes the degree to which the EU is funding an entire ecosystem of NGOs, media outlets, and “civil society” operatives paid to monitor, flag, and suppress political views that fall outside the approved script – especially on topics like immigration, national sovereignty, and EU legitimacy.

But the issue is even wider than the EU’s astroturfed campaign to create a moral panic around disinformation. As challenges multiply to the EU mainstream, the pressure to “control the narrative” is becoming ever-greater. Initiatives such as the EU’s “democracy shield” suggest a desire to intervene more and more forcefully to ensure that EU-approved candidates win elections, and only EU-approved ideas get a public hearing. Is the EU set on proving right JD Vance’s assertion that the bloc has a serious problem with free speech?

Join us for a frank discussion on the future of speech, sovereignty, and the battle over who gets to decide what is “misinformation” in modern Europe.
